The Holiday season is by far the most wonderful time of the year! However if you are not conscious of the stress triggers associated with holiday parties, shopping and family, things can really snowball out of control quickly. 1.) Keep healthy energizing snacks on hand
It’s certain one of the gifts most people would ask for during the holidays is more time in their day. If only there was a way to add an extra hour, or 5! While changing our days from 24 hours to 25 hours is not possible, and of course the other solution, sleep less is still compromising a harmonious balance in our lives, the best advice is to PREPARE. Speaking of crazy people; inevitably we are going to see an increase in traffic during the holiday season. while this may appear to be a hindrance to many, you can capitalize on this extended car drive time all season long by turning your car into a sacred shrine for transformation. We are constantly being bombarded with unnecessary media and advertisements through our radios. Why not utilize the time to train your brain for the better of you? Educational, motivational or meditative cd’s and ipod tracks are perfect for any length of car ride. You could begin learning that foreign language you keep mentioning, long before your New Year’s resolution. Maybe listen to your favorite motivational speaker who inspires you to maintain optimistic outlooks throughout your day. 5.) Bring your own healthy recipes to parties and dinners
Another great stressor of the holidays can be all the food we are expected to indulge in while visiting visiting family and friends. And of course no one wants to offend their family and friends by refusing desserts their loved ones spent tireless hours creating! Never fear, just breathe! Whether you are experiencing holiday anxiety or depression give this simple four count breathing technique a try, it will change your life.
Yes we know this sounds like a cliche idea, however it works! The idea is to sit in private and breathe in through your NOSE for four counts. Even if you’re in the middle of a party you can excuse yourself to the restroom or a nearby bedroom and perform this exercise for as little as 5 to 6 breathes or as long as 15 minutes. The technique should begin with a moderate 4 count breath in, hold the breath for another 4 counts, and then release the breath for the same 4 counts. This may take a little time to develop a smooth pattern so don’t give up if it’s not natural feeling in the beginning. Also if the 4 count is too intense then begin with a 3 count. If you can develop the habit of beginning your day with this breathing technique you will certainly find a sense of ease not only through the holiday season but the entire year.
Although gift giving has become the staple expression of love and generosity during the holiday season, it is equally important to show your love by being be capable of receiving a gift. While giving gifts is an extremely beautiful and rewarding act, it can lead to much anxiety and depression if the true nature of giving is not understood. Many of us spend countless hours and money stressing over who we should give gifts to and what is a gift worthy of being given as a show of our appreciation for another. To this we ask you, why all the stress, isn’t giving supposed to be fun? When we discuss the idea of being worthy throughout the holiday season, two concepts should be observed.
First, receiving is a form of giving. When you receive a gift, you create an opportunity for the giver to give to you selflessly. The minute you feel guilt about receiving this gift or the immediate need to reciprocate the gift, the energy of giving becomes compromised. By simply accepting the gift with extreme gratitude not only do you give the “gift” of opportunity for someone to be a giver, but you also detach from any anxiety associated with guilt of needing to return the gesture. Secondly, we must recognize that your value does not and cannot be measured by material gifts. Do not underestimate the value of your presence to others: your warm hugs, a friendly smile, taking time to listen to your friend vent about all the holiday stress they’ve been experiencing. These actions of love are the gifts people seek from you. Even if they say they want, X,Y and Z. What they really mean is they want connection and love.
